Pont Alarch 12th Night

14 - 16 Jan 2005, Old Bramhope, England
Mundane name: Marc Brownett
SCA persona name: Dante Garrett Graywards

This year’s 12th Night went very well. Once again, this report will be more of a personal account than an overview of the weekend as I obviously miss events, such as archery practice while I was heavy fighting. Also due to being more active in the heavy scene, I wasn’t able to take as many photos as usual. Cheers again for the armour fixing and the gorget Alex, you the man. ^__^
Great feast, entertainment, and organization. Everyone involved did a great job.
If anyone who attended has photos or reports they can offer, please get in contact with me.

Referring to my heavy fighting, this was the first actual event where I have fought. It was my best display so far but still far from anything good. I have the stamina and strength of a small kitten. I’ll be trying to train myself up more whenever I get the chance in-between events. I got a sound thrashing, winning only one round out of the many, despite getting good hits on the legs of three separate opponents and forcing them to continue the round in the kneeling position. I need to level up more.

I must give my apologies to my shire for not being able to go through my late-night constable-related responsibilities on the Saturday night due to being absolutely knackered. This was a conjunction of getting over a cold, only having four hours sleep previously, and pushing myself to fight in heavy-ass armour for most of the day. Basically, the bardic circle was still in use round 2:30am, when I decided to go to bed, so I was unable to help make sure it was safely put out. I was sure that there would be other responsible people attending to it however, so I actually slipped into the much-required sleep quite quickly… I still ache three days later, hee.
By the way, have to say, great singing at the circle and in the feast by all.

Captain Everild and I acquired a few more members for our pirate ship, The Defiant. The court was… interesting. Everild overheard me telling Finagan about a plot I had at the last event. Two seconds later we were plotting its implementation with Fyrnae.

The ‘trashing of the court’ (we're sooo after photos and video of this)
The court was going well, awards were awarded, and the congregation were merry. The few that were sleeping were woken up along with gasps from the crowd as three members of the previously unknown corsair ship, The Defiant, burst in through the back entrance.
The three comprised of young Finagan, baring mighty copper hair, a fierce growl and a wooden sword, first mate Dante Graywards, waving around a small wooden dagger at anything that moved, and captain Everild Sweordbora, brazenly leading the group forward in the plot to steal plunder from the Viceroy and Vicereigne.
“What is this?” called out the herald, Fyrnae, “Pirates from the high seas? Come to cause mayhem…”
“And general naughtiness,” Dante pointed out to the crowd.
Fyrnae quickly called forth the constable, Leonatus, who readied his halberd to attack.
Dante franticly waved his hands knowing what would happen but it was too late.
Stepping forward, captain Everild took out her pistol and pointed it.
“You cheated,” squeaked Leonatus.
“Pirate,” reminded Everild before pulling the trigger.
The crowd grew quiet at the dramatic death scene.
The pirates then turned on the Viceroy and Vicereigne, with Everild demanding their coronets, which they didn’t have in their possession.
“You don’t have them?” asked Everild.
“Nope,” replied the Viceroy.
“Chains of office?”
“No?”
“Corgis?”
The two shook their heads.
“Ahh…” said the pirates.
“We do however,” added the Viceroy, “have the captain of our own ship present. Lord Acarin.”
The most respected captain of The Antelope stood.
Dante turned to Everild; “We’re in trouble aren’t we?”
She nodded as Acarin called forth Alexander and Mel who then walked forward and captured the three, taking them away.
As the pirates were detained, captain Acarin used the last of the rare and random ‘mead of life’ on Leonatus to resurrect him, much to the Defiant’s shock as he appeared before them to drag them back into court. Ordered to kneel before the Viceroy and Vicereigne, their fate was sealed. They became slaves to Admiral Antonio on The Antelope before being stranded on an unknown spit of land.
Two days past…
Everild and Dante lay back sunbathing on the sandy beach of the small island out in the middle of nowhere.
Suddenly Finagan cast a shadow over them and pointed out towards the waves; “A raft! There’s a raft!”
The captain and first mate darted up in surprise. Looking to each other, they grinned, not concerned over the details on how it came about.
And so, armed with a cat-o-nine-tails, two wooden spoons, and a ball of string, the three paddled their way back to land to hunt for their lost ship.

Baroness Cathryn of Chester’s *proper* report
I believe I can safely classify 12th Night a Success in all respects.
The food was awesome, the entertainment enjoyable, the small tourneys enlightening, and the company incomparable. Vivat to all and one who joined and pitched in in their own way to make this such a memorable event. My list of thank yous is too long to repeat here as I’m pleased to say I had a great deal of assistance with the planning, set up, running, and the never so much fun job of clean up after.

Despite the drizzly weather on and off during the day the Archers took their aim against a variety of targets. Robyn Greenbow was presented with the Archery competition prize for the, “Most damage to cuddly toys.”

On the slippery field of the Heavy Weapons, Lord Alexander of Derlington took honours for the, “Best Mud Skiing.”

In the Rapier circle, they opted to give the award to a volunteer from the audience, Lindsey from York, for, “Best Sport.”

For the Gaming Competition, Ally the Chairman, was highlighted for her creativity in the face of so many new and unusual games to her, by inventing her own called, “Spin the Fox.” Lord Roderick was the over all games winner based on totals however.

In the spirit of supporting the nature of our Society, we presented Alienore Merrifeelde with the, “Best Newcomer Garb,” for her kit she made for the event.

Many more fun tokens were presented to assorted gentles for their antics through the event.

Court saw a sight not often presented (due to the logistics) but in consideration of the large number of new and new-ish people attending, we held a processional by order of precedence as best as was possible without a proper OOP, and without having the advantage of the ranking orders of other kingdom, which in itself is a nightmare. Many back logged scrolls were presented. It was lovely to see the wonderful work of Countess Honor, 13 in all, that were looking for their new homes. With luck this might encourage some of our budding scribes to go to work and see their own talents shown round the Principality! Vivat to our Court Herald, without whom we couldn’t have held court. THL Fyrnae did a marvelous job for having been thrown in at the deep end by me volunteering her because of a misunderstanding in an e-mail! All the first time court event attendees were given a token
From Their Excellencies, Lord Brian and Lady Mary, Viceroy and Vicereigne of the
Crown Principality of Insulae Draconis as representatives of the Crown of Drachenwald.

And a rousing round of applause for the former King and Queen of Misrule, Lord Alexander and Lady Padraigin! They graced our High Table along with the Viceroy and Vicereigne and Their respective guests to entertain as we supped on a most delicious feast that left many too full for the last course.

Many thanks to those who brought donations in support of the Rotary International’s “Aquabox” project as their tourney/competition submission. We ended up with a nice variety of goods for their disaster relief efforts.

The evening rounded off with a chilly but dry night for the Bardic Competition around the fire circle. Due to the timing of the circle however, we weren’t able to properly present our new Bard of Pont Alarch, Lady Padraigin, with her prize. That will have to wait for the next CaMP in February.

Quotes:
Deb/Caitilin, the stew chef; “And Dante ate veggies too, so I’m taking that as the highest form of compliment!”
